The knowledge how children are travelling in cars and why they travel in the way they are travelling is crucial for the improvement of cars and CRS with respect to child safety and the development of child safety campaigns. The CASPER project expects considerable differences concerning the choice of child restraint system the trip circumstances etc. in different parts of the world and even in different parts of Europe. Detailed investigation in France, Spain and Italy took place in order to have a qualitative view on this subject.

In order to get a broader insight CASPER starts an internet survey encouraging parents from world-wide to take part.

November 30–31, 2010, Munich, Germany

The CASPER and EPOCh projects on child safety are organising a joint mid-term workshop to present their research findings on child safety and to discuss future activities. This two day workshop will be held on 29 and 30 November 2010 in Munich (Germany).

Although significant achieve-ments have been made in reducing fatalities and injuries in traffic accidents over the last decade, continued efforts are needed to bring the num-bers down further. Motivated by this, the CASPER and EPOCh projects will address some aspects of child safety in vehicles.

Workshop

A workshop is organised under the flag of the COVER Coordination and Support Action. The purpose of this joined Workshop is to inform the public about the progress of CASPER and EPOCh and to receive feedback on future research direction via open discussions. Participation in this event is free of charge.

Registrations can be made online.

**) The Q-Dummy Family is based on the CANDAT database (newer data from the 1990ies, not available for the public)
***) Pulmonary disease – disease that causes narrowing of the airways in the lungs. This leads to a limitation of the flow of air to and from the lungs causing shortness of breath. This disease can cause abnormal growth of the lungs and the ribcage (reduced lung volume, connected with the abnormity of the ribcage and the neighbour organs size).

TU Berlin takes over the part of modelling the thorax / abdomen for the 3 y.o. child.

The main focus in modelling of the torso lies on the following inner organs:

3YO FE Child Model organs

The other inner organs / the digestive system will be modelled with a simplified model, as injuries in this area are not that often like with the mentioned above.

For the validation procedure of the final model only few studies are available. Most of them are from the 80ies and were performed with PMHS’s (post mortem human subject). For the mechanical properties of certain inner organs with no available test data, the numerical material characteristics will be scaled down from the adult data. Another option is to fall back on data gained from animal tests (as long as comparable). Possible candidates for this purpose are e.g. monkeys or young swine’s.
